If the elevator is not working there are some things that you may be able to check on your own. It may save you a service call.

1) Check to make sure that the elevator gate and all the shaft doors are closed. Especially the door you just exited.

2) Check that the emergency stop button on the Car operating panel (C.O.P.) is pushed in toward the elevator car wall.

3) Check the slack cable switch. It is located on the motor which is either in the basement or attic. There are little link chains that will lead you to the switch. Make sure that the switch is pulled back and not forward.

4) Perform an electrical reset. Turn off the 30 amp breaker in your electrical panel and leave it off for at least 5 minutes. Then turn the breaker back on and try to run the elevator normally.

5) If your elevator is a hydraulic unit, check the control box. This box is usually found in the attic or basement next to the pump unit (hydraulic tank) and listen for a beeping sound. If you hear that beeping sound, it is because the battery that backs up the elevator is dead. If this is the case, you will need to contact Colson Elevator Company to come out and replace it for you.
